A satirical petition calling for Denmark to raise $1 trillion to purchase California has taken the internet by storm, garnering over 200,000 signatures.
The petition playfully proposes that Denmark should acquire the Golden State, citing the region’s warm climate, palm trees, and roller-skating culture as desirable assets.

“Have you ever looked at a map and thought, ‘You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates,’” the petition asks. “Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality.”
It goes on to suggest that Denmark could buy California from former President Donald Trump. “Yes, you heard that right. California could be ours, and we need your help to make it happen,” it states.
The petition emerged in response to Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory. While officials in both Denmark and Greenland have strongly rejected the idea, the online petition uses humor to counter Trump’s ambitions.
Beyond its comedic tone, the petition outlines supposed benefits of Denmark purchasing California, including an endless supply of avocados, better weather, and a technological edge.
“Gaining an extra bunch of tech bros? Great! It is what every democracy needs,” the petition quips. The text further suggests renaming Disneyland to “Hans Christian Andersenland,” where Mickey Mouse would don a Viking helmet.
Crowdfunding a trillion dollars and rebranding California
The petition doesn’t stop at outlining the dream of a Danish California. It humorously proposes raising a trillion dollars “give or take a few billion” through crowdfunding and sending Denmark’s “bestest negotiators” to seal the deal. Suggested negotiators include Lego executives and the cast of Borgen, a popular Danish political drama.
If successful, the state would be renamed “New Denmark,” with Los Angeles humorously rebranded as “Løs Ångeles.” The petition also envisions bringing Danish culture to California by introducing hygge to Hollywood, bike lanes to Beverly Hills, and organic smørrebrød on every street corner.
“Rule of law, universal healthcare, and fact-based politics might apply,” the petition cheekily adds, taking a jab at American political trends.
While Denmark’s interest in California is purely satirical, Trump’s enthusiasm for Greenland has stirred serious discussions. The former president has described U.S. control of Greenland as an “absolute necessity.”
Officials in Greenland and Denmark have repeatedly dismissed the idea, but some Danish sources told CNN they believe Trump is more serious about acquiring the island than when he first suggested it during his initial term.
Despite strong opposition from Danish and Greenlandic officials, the debate over Greenland’s future remains active. However, the speech made no mention of the United States.
The satirical petition, while humorous, highlights the growing global conversation about territorial expansion, national identity, and international relations—all wrapped in a clever, lighthearted package that has captured the imagination of thousands online.
