Listeria is a severe bacterial infection caused by eating food contaminated with listeria and causes listeriosis which is a serious health condition in older adults – aged 65 or older, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the USDA recommend the following safety measures:

  • Check product labels: Ensure to inspect any Boar’s Head products you have at home. Trash any products that match the description of any of the recalled products or those that have the USDA mark of inspection.
  • Monitor for symptoms: People in high-risk categories such as older adults, pregnant women and people with weak immune systems should be alert for symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headaches, stiff neck, confusion, and gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea. Pregnant women should be especially alert as listeria can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and severe infection in newborns.
  • Seek medical attention: Those who may have possibly eaten any Boar’s Head products should seek medical attention immediately. Those who are currently experiencing these symptoms are advised to go for a medical check up within two months to avoid any complications.
