Major recall for over a million coolers due to risk of horrific injury

Igloo Cooler recall: over 1 million units pulled due to finger amputation risk.

Igloo is recalling more than 1 million large rolling coolers in the U.S. due to a serious safety risk. The recall affects the 90-quart Igloo Flip & Tow rolling coolers, which have been found to pose a danger to consumers.

Reason for recall

According to a notice published by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on Thursday:

  • The cooler’s tow handle can pinch users’ fingertips.
  • The defect can lead to fingertip amputation, crushing injuries, fractures, and lacerations.
  • Igloo has advised customers to stop using the coolers immediately until they receive a replacement handle.

Affected models

  • The recalled coolers were produced before January 2023.
  • They were sold in various body and lid color combinations.
  • Model numbers and manufacturing dates are located on the bottom of the coolers:
    • The model number appears on a label.
    • The manufacturing year is imprinted on the cooler itself.

Reports of injuries

So far, there have been 12 reported incidents of consumers injuring their fingertips due to the faulty handle. Reported injuries include:

  • Fingertip amputations
  • Bone fractures
  • Lacerations

Where were the coolers sold?

The recalled Igloo coolers were available at several major retailers:

  • Costco
  • Target
  • Academy Sports + Outdoors
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods
  • Amazon and other online platforms
  • Igloo’s official website

They were sold between January 2019 and January 2024.

What should customers do?

Igloo is offering a free replacement handle for affected customers.

Steps to take:

  1. Stop using the cooler immediately.
  2. Check the model number and manufacturing year on the bottom of your cooler.
  3. Visit Igloo’s recall webpage to register for a free repair kit.
  4. Follow Igloo’s instructions to install the replacement handle safely.

Company’s response

Igloo issued a statement to FOX Business emphasizing its commitment to consumer safety:

“With consumer safety as our top priority, we have voluntarily issued a recall on the 90QT Flip & Tow Rolling Cooler and have provided consumers with a proper course of action that includes a free replacement handle. Through rigorous testing and proactive steps, we are constantly improving our products to meet the highest safety standards.”

The company has also posted about the recall on its social media channels to spread awareness.

Additional recalls in Canada and Mexico

Aside from the 1 million recalled coolers in the U.S., another 70,000 units have been recalled in Canada and Mexico.
