More than 12,000 cases of Walmart’s Great Value chicken broth have been recalled – These are the affected batches

Walmart is recalling more than 12,000 cases of Great Value Family Size Chicken Broth due to packaging failure.

Walmart is recalling more than 12,000 cartons of its Great Value Family Size Chicken Broth because the product may have experienced packaging failure. Packaging failure can lead to a non sterile product. The packaging failure can also allow spoilage into the broth.

Product description

  • Packaging size: 48-ounce cartons
  • Best if used by date: March 25, 2026
  • Batch (Lot) Code: 98F09234
  • Retail Unit UPC: 007874206684
  • Case UPC: 078742066844

Distribution

The recalled broth was distributed to some 242 Walmart stores in nine states, including:

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Georgia
  • Louisiana
  • Missouri
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Tennessee
  • Texas

Reason for recall

The recall is due to concerns that some of the packaging may fail and impact product sterility, which could result in spoilage. Spoilage can lead to a variety of health problems if consumed because bacteria can grow without changing the taste, odor or appearance; it is impossible for consumers to detect spoiled products, placing them at a higher risk for foodborne illness.

Consumer guidance

Consumers who have purchased the affected product should not consume it. Consumers may discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. To date, no illnesses have been reported. Walmart has pulled all impacted products from the select, affected stores and is working with the supplier to investigate the matter.

Health implications

Although no illnesses have been reported, compromised packaging can lead to bacterial contamination. If consumed, it could cause health risks. Symptoms of foodborne illness can include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, headaches, and body aches. Consumers experiencing any of these symptoms after consuming the product should contact their healthcare provider.

Company statement

A spokesperson with Walmart said, “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. The moment the issue was brought to our attention, all impacted products were removed from the select, impacted stores. We continue to work with the supplier to investigate.”

Previous recalls

This action is the result of a related recall in December 2024 by Braga Fresh that consisted of a recalled washed and ready-to-eat 12-ounce Marketside Broccoli Florets potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes that was sold in Walmart Stores in 20 states.

Consumer action

Consumers are advised to check their pantries for the above product and act on the instructions indicated. Additional information can be obtained by contacting Walmart’s customer service or through the official recall notice as indicated on the FDA’s website.
