Following other major retailers, TJ Maxx and its sibling chain Marshalls are allowing their workers to have Christmas Day off, saying all 1,300-plus stores across the United States will be closed along with more than 1,200 Marshalls outlets on December 25, 2024.Â
Holiday closure details
The 24-hour closure will allow employees to spend time with their families on this holiday. Extended hours in preparation for the holiday include opening as early as 8 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 24. All stores revert to their usual hours: 9:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Sundays on December 26.
Marshalls’ hours will be similar as well; it will open most stores at 7 a.m. and remain open as late as 10 p.m. in the days leading up to Christmas. Marshalls also will close on the early side on Christmas Eve, around 6 p.m. Store hours can vary, and it is always a good idea to call the local store and confirm the opening and closing times.
Holiday closures across the board
As mentioned above, stores that would remain closed on Christmas Day are TJ Maxx and Marshalls. In fact, Macy’s, Costco, Target, Walmart, Dollar Tree, have recently reported their store’s closure for Christmas to give employees a real day to relax with family.
That speaks to the greater retail trend of looking out for the well-being of employees on primary holidays. Other retailers announcing closures on Christmas Day include Kohl’s, Big Lots, JCPenney, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, Wegman’s Winn-Dixie, and Sam’s Club.
Shopping alternatives
The following stores will be open to those shoppers who want to make some purchases on Christmas Day, with limited hours: 7-Eleven and some grocery chains like Wawa may be opened in some locations. The pharmacies, such as CVS and Walgreens, and the same-day delivery service provided by Amazon probably can offer a few delivered items within hours, location, and availability pending.
Plan ahead
The Commission wishes to urge consumers to try and make all purchases this holiday season before Christmas Day and avoid any inconvenience. Because most retailers will not be open during the course of the holiday. Know what your store hours are now and use their extended hours of operation in the days leading up to Christmas to eliminate stress and frustration.
Employee welfare and corporate responsibility
While TJ Maxx and Marshalls have opted to close on Christmas Day, among others, they have stood tall in commitments related to employee welfare and corporate responsibility. They understand that on special occasions like holidays, especially days of huge cultural or religious importance, allowing time with family keeps the staff’s work-life balance upright.
