To file your taxes separately from your spouse, your income will be taxed within the range of your income bracket. Your tax rates are calculated based on your income bracket.

  • You’d be required to pay between $0 and $11,000.

The 12% ratio

How can you determine your tax rate according to your income bracket?

The IRS has seven separate tax rate ratios, which determine the amount of tax that should be paid for income received. These ratios are categorized based on their percentages—10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37% ratios.

The rates offered by the IRS determine how much of your income should be paid as taxes, especially if you’re married and filing separately.

The IRS has updated the guidelines that will give you information on how to file your tax return if you are in this category of taxpayers.

To do this, you first have to determine the category of filing you want to do. This is because different figures are expected for different categories of persons who would be filing. Then, you calculate the rate that applies to your income bracket using the category (filing as an individual, filing jointly as a couple, filing separately as a couple, filing as head of household, or filing as a qualified surviving spouse) you belong in.

Once this has been decided, it becomes easier for you to determine how much tax you will pay using the information shared above according to the IRS.

Will changes be made to the tax rates?

The tax rates for 2024 will not experience changes as the required changes were already implemented as part of over 60 tax adjustments made by the IRS at the end of 2023. However, it has been suggested that tax rates in the US might see some changes in the coming year.

These changes will see taxes on middle-class families rise by almost $3,000 as a two-income tax bracket will be implemented in 2025 and will also ensure that taxes on the wealthy will be cut down.

The IRS has also made provisions for couples who would like to file jointly. The same filing rates in terms of percentages apply, however, they would be paying a different amount of taxes from couples filing separately.
