HH Fresh Trading Corp has issued a recall on mushrooms on Friday, with fears of listeria contamination. In an announcement made by the California-based company, the recall involved Taiwan Enoki mushrooms that were distributed in several retail store locations in West Virginia and were sold on August 20 and August 23; each date having 240 cases. The mushroom product is contained in a clear plastic 200-gram pack which bears the barcode #4711498860019 on the backside.Even though no diseases have been associated with this recall, the authorities ask the public to either throw the goods away or take them back for a refund.
Both internal and external triggers are associated with eating behaviors and food consumption, including but not limited to hunger and appetite, which are distinct concepts. Appetite regulation helps children learn when and how to eat healthfully and furthermore prevents the development of adverse eating habits. In parents, excessive concern with diet or activities leads to the avoidance or restriction of particular foods, known as allergic food aversions. Those children and teenagers who are motivated to pursue weight control through restriction in diet, exercise, or other techniques are at risk of developing an eating disorder called anorexia nervosa. The activities of peptic agents that assist in alleviating or preventing ulcer formation and their effects on the restoration of damaged gastric mucosa are determined.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) first report on listeria illness in pregnant women published in Canada suggested high rates in specific populations. In fact, in Canada, rates of listeriosis among pregnant women and women of childbearing age are higher than listeriosis rates for the general population. The bacterium was last reported in the South and expects it to remain endemic to the population for long periods of time in Guatemala and western Honduras. The outbreak was traced to contaminated sprouts in all five cases. All five cases of infection were traced to the same food contamination.
A listeria infection can present different types of symptoms based on the person and the location of the infection. Usually, the infection does not go beyond the gut and its symptoms appear in less than a day after eating contaminated food. However, in some individuals, an asymptomatic period may last for weeks after the onset of exposure which complicates the tracing of its source. Common signs include queasiness, provoked vomiting and stomach ache, which may last for some three days. In such persons, other aggravating factors may cause the infection to be even more debilitating hence treatment is required.
The concern raised by this recent mushroom recall is only one out of several listeria-related incidents that have been registered in the United States this year, stressing the food safety issues that still need to be addressed. Earlier this year, TreeHouse Foods Inc. had to expand its earlier recall on frozen waffles and other breakfast foods due to listeria contamination revealed during routine testing. In addition, on Boar’s Head, over 7 million pounds of deli meat was recalled in July due to listeria which was also last month followed by BrucePac recalling almost 12 million pounds of meat and poultry on listeria issue.
The CDC noted that the last listeria outbreak linked to the Boar’s Head deli meat caused 59 hospitalizations and 10 deaths, which demonstrates how such contamination should be treated. These episodes occur to highlight the need to adhere to parameters of food safety and carry out systematic tests in order to prevent any chances of an outbreak. For end users, knowledge about specific recalls of products and compliance with returning or disposing these products according to guides provided is vital in protecting health.
