The tax-free weekend is an annual event encouraging locals to purchase goods. The goods that can enjoy tax-free status include clothing, school supplies, and backpacks.
When does the tax weekend start?
The tax-free weekend for Texas is set to start on Friday, August 9. It is expected to run for three days and end on the 11 of the same month. The sales will end at midnight on August 11.
The tax-free weekend offers shoppers the chance to save money on purchases. It is usually held in the weeks before the new school year.
More than this, shoppers can save money while purchasing essential items.
The cumulative tax for Texas is 6.25%, a combination of sales and use taxes. Local jurisdictions can raise it to 8.25% by adding 2%.
What can be purchased?
The Texas tax-free weekend offers shoppers plenty of options for what they can purchase, including most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks.
To qualify each individual item must be worth less than $100. Therefore, knowing an item’s total price before purchasing is essential. This helps to determine if it can be bought tax-free. Note also that the sale must take place during the tax-free period.

- Headbands,
- Wallets
- Handbags,
- Purses, etc.
Shoppers can also purchase school supplies that include:
- bookbags,
- cellophane tapes,
- blackboard chalk,
- crayons,
- erasers etc.
The following items do not qualify for this exemption:
- framed backpacks
- luggage
- briefcases
- athletic, duffle, or gym bags
- computer bags
- purses
Are online sales included?
Yes. Online sales for state residents can be made. This included purchases at global stores like Amazon.
You can also purchase via mail, phone, or in-store. All of these options are available.
As stated, it should be noted that only goods purchased during the tax-free weekend are eligible for exemption. Those purchased before or after the tax-free weekend are not eligible.
