Fortnite players who made accidental purchases years ago are finally seeing justice served. Starting Monday, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will distribute over $72 million in refunds to approximately 629,000 affected Fortnite users. Each individual will receive around $114 if they successfully file a claim.
The refund program originated from a 2022 settlement in which the FTC accused Epic Games, the developer that created the epic game Fortnite, of using misleading techniques prompting inadvertent spending on the platform. This settlement was as a result of allegations that Epic Games used “dark patterns,” a design tactic that misleads people into making purchases they did not intend to make.

The payments mark the first wave of compensation to impacted players. According to an FTC release, additional funds will be distributed at a later date, though details remain sparse. Recipients will receive their refunds either through checks or PayPal. The FTC advises PayPal recipients to redeem payments within 30 days, while those receiving checks should cash them within 90 days. Questions or concerns can be addressed by contacting the refund administrator listed in the FTC’s announcement.

Why the refunds were issued
The refunds are the latest elements of a wider settlement umbrella that soaked Epic Games with $520 million in 2022. The settlement settled two major issues: alleged transgressions against the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and deceptive design patterns making millions click on buttons, making accidental purchases.
This particular payment round is targeted at those players who made unintended transactions because of the game’s interface and design elements that the FTC claimed to be manipulative. It is reported that players, many underage, are coaxed into spending money without clear permission or understanding of the transactions.
The FTC’s crackdown on Epic Games highlights the growing scrutiny of how video games and other digital platforms interact with users, particularly minors. Companies are being held accountable for practices that exploit consumer behavior, especially when it involves vulnerable groups like children.
How to file a claim
For those who believe they may have been affected by accidental Fortnite purchases, it’s not too late to act. The FTC is still accepting claims, allowing impacted individuals to seek refunds. Claims can be filed online through the FTC’s refund process.
