If you’ve been thinking of getting a temporary job during the holidays, I have news for you. The peak holiday shopping period is coming, and many major retail chains are and will be recruiting for thousands of employees. Online supermarkets Amazon, Dicks Sporting Gentlemen’s Goods, Macy’s, Target, and J.C. Penney have all now flagged their plans for seasonal employment.
To begin with, let’s see the extent of the vacancies. Yes, and how much each of the companies pays.
Macy’s: 31,500 Positions Available
Macy’s is looking to hire more than 31,500 seasonal workers, which is a bit lower than last year’s 38,000 hires. Jobs start at $15 per hour, and pay ranges are clearly listed on all job postings nationwide. The jobs are spread across Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Bluemercury stores, and distribution centers, but most of the positions will be at Macy’s stores and its distribution centers.
Here are other retailers that will be hiring this holiday.
Amazon: 250,000 Job Openings
Amazon is looking for a substantial number of 250,000 employees across the globe in full-time, part-time, and seasonal positions focusing on customer fulfillment and transport. This is the second consecutive year that the retail store is employing this many workers. The wage paid to seasonal workers begins at 18 dollars an hour, while the average salary for workers in these jobs is over 29 dollars plus benefits. In addition to healthcare and tuition reimbursement, full-time employees also enjoy other benefits from day one of work. They also return to work after the winter season is done, with about a third of the holiday hires returning to work at Amazon.
Target: 100,000 seasonal jobs
Target is encroaching on 2,000 of its stores and over 50 of its supply chain facilities by adding 100,000 seasonal team members. The pay range for these positions varies from $15 to $24 per hour. In all cases, extreme hours are provided to its existing workforce before new staff is recruited. More than 50 percent of seasonal workers from the previous year are retained and encouraged to continue working for the organization after the festive season.
JCPenney: 10,000 Openings
JCPenney is hiring over 10,000 seasonal workers, with positions available in customer service and truck team roles. They are holding a national hiring event from October 16-18, both in stores and online. Seasonal workers may also have the chance to stay on after the holidays. JCPenney stores will be closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, giving employees time off for the holidays.
Dick’s Sporting Goods: 8,000 Jobs
Dick’s Sporting Goods is looking to hire 8,000 seasonal “teammates” for the 2024 holiday season. They will kick off hiring on October 8 with a “National Signing Day” at all Dick’s Sporting Goods, Dick’s House of Sport, Public Lands, and Going, Going, Gone! stores. Pay is described as “competitive,” though the company hasn’t provided exact figures.
T.J. Maxx: Holiday Hiring Focused on Part-Time
While T.J. Maxx didn’t provide specific numbers, they did say that most seasonal hiring in stores will be for part-time positions, while distribution and fulfillment centers will focus on full-time roles. There’s also the possibility for regular employment after the holidays.
Walmart: No official hiring numbers yet
Seasonal hiring figures have not been disclosed by Walmart this year. Its emphasis will be on assigning more hours to existing workers first, and if there’s a need for more, then hiring will occur on a store-to-store basis. In the year 2022, Walmart employed 40,000 workers on a temporary basis. The average hourly rate for Walmart staff in America is nearly $18.
Key away: If you are interested in seasonal employment opportunities, then this is the period to grab the chances. Most of these positions, however, can be extended beyond the holidays.
