Is Veterans Day a federal holiday? Are banks, supermakerts, post offices closed on Veterans Day?

Honoring service and navigating holiday closures: what to expect on veterans day

With the date being Monday, November 11, Veterans Day holds its significance in honoring those who had served in army forces of the United States. It is a vital day in the calendar having its origin from the armistice that was signed on the 11th of November in the year 1918 that marked the ending of the first World war. This day also serves as a reminder of how much veterans have contributed and not surprisingly, a schedule of activities is often put in place by several organizations in their effort to embrace the holiday.

To the federal workers, Veterans Day implies taking a break from work. In this case, the federal offices will remain shut down and therefore, you should make any requests for such services before or after the holiday. The closure is effective throughout the country and includes employees of the federal government in most industries. The same goes for the banks which observe the holiday calendar as per the federal guidelines; all the banks that are federally administered will not operate. Thus, if you require any banking services, it is prudent to do so either earlier or following the holiday.

Another sector that is also affected is that of mail delivery. The delivery of mails and packages by the United States Postal Service is bent to undergo suspension on Veterans Day hence mails and packages from USPS will not be delivered on that day. But, there is no complete stoppage of the distribution of goods and services operated by USPS. Other private companies like FedEx and UPS will be in operation so if you are expecting a package from them, there will be no disruption whatsoever.

When it comes to city services, whether your garbage will be picked up varies. In cities like Columbus and Cincinnati, Veterans Day is considered a holiday, so there will be no trash or recycling pickup. Residents in these areas might want to review their city’s schedule for specifics on makeup days if they’re missing service that Monday. Meanwhile, in Akron and Canton, regular garbage services are set to continue as usual, but if you live in a different city, it’s a good idea to check with your local providers just to be certain.

Varying even more than those of the other institutions are the schools. Also, whether schools shut down on Veterans Day or not, is more so within the mandate of each school district’s operations. Some of these areas may decide to suspend learning, whereas in other regions classes proceed as scheduled. If you have kids in school, it is advisable to either browse through your grade level or district appropriate website to see if there are any changes in regards to school closures or a phone call is made to the district in question.

With regard to stores and restaurants, many of such businesses shall be open to the public on Veterans Day but their operating hours may differ. For instance, some stores and eateries are known to slightly restructure their operating hours on this day but they still remain open to customers. If you want to go to a particular store or a restaurant, it would be prudent to give them a call and check their operating hours as it would save your time. Many establishments also have great offers or discounts for veteran clients, so if you or someone you know is a veteran, it would be nice to check if there are any offers around.

Veterans Day is a day to take a break from your Norman schedules and have a special day dedicated to remembering the Veterans. Except for a few things about today which I do not like. If it is the day you look forward to taking the day off from work, the day you need information regarding school closed days or even city changes regarding mail and service, planning helps you excel on the day that comes. It is the period to appreciate the veterans and if possible, acknowledge their service.
