Hurricane Milton kills four people in St. Lucie County as it exits into the Atlantic Ocean

Hurricane Milton made landfall on October 9, 2024, as a Category 3 storm near Siesta Key, Florida. It brought furious winds, pouring rain, and tornadoes across the state. Now that the storm is well out to sea, it leaves in its wake a tale of destruction and tragedy.

Milton rapidly intensified over the Gulf of Mexico to winds of 124 mph (200 km/h) before making landfall, The southward trajectory of the storm’s track sent it across Tampa’s southern suburbs and directly into cities such as Sarasota, Fort Myers, and St. Petersburg. More than eight hours later, Milton became a Category 1 hurricane as it exited northward into the Atlantic Ocean, not before causing widespread damage in its path. 

Casualties and injuries

At least fourteen deaths could be directly related to Hurricane Milton as of Thursday morning, officials said; four of those in St. Lucie County because of the tornadoes advanced by the hurricane before it struck land and destroyed areas such as the Spanish Lakes Country Club near Fort Pierce, among several others, resulting in violent damage and the loss of life.

Besides the fatalities, hundreds were injured. Search and rescue are still being conducted by the emergency services, and officials say that the number of deaths might increase further as the assessments are still ongoing.

Extent of the damage

The extensive impact of the storm Hurricane Milton:

  • Damaged infrastructure: Over 125 houses were destroyed. Out of these, most were mobile homes in senior living communities. The power and water systems were critically affected.
  • Power outages: Downed power lines and damaged substations left more than 3.3 million Floridian citizens without electricity.
  • Flooding: Other areas, such as St. Petersburg, experienced up to almost 18 inches of rain, resulting in extreme flooding with many roads impassable. Flash flood warning remains in several areas.
  • Tornado activity: This hurricane indeed generated at least a dozen tornadoes across Florida that further enhanced the extent of damage caused by this hurricane. According to the reports, the tornadoes caused considerable structural damage to the buildings and infrastructure.

Government response and recovery efforts

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been working hard to coordinate the response efforts. He said it was a big storm but might have been a lot worse had it stayed stronger when it reached land. With the days passing, local officials are in a race against time to restore vital services and carry out damage assessments. The efforts have not been without hiccups, considering the continued flooding in several places and dangerous conditions for recovery personnel. Governor DeSantis assured that though some areas received catastrophic damage, there was a good luck factor in respect of mitigated damage in other places, thirteen times as many.
