Children of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter
John William “Jack” Carter, James Earl “Chip” Carter III, Donnel Jeffrey “Jeff” Carter, and Amy Lynn Carter. All the children have taken their paths in life, contributing to various fields while continuing with the ideals instilled by their parents.
John William “Jack” Carter
John William “Jack” Carter, born July 3, 1947, in Portsmouth, Virginia, is the eldest son of Jimmy and Rosalynn. Raised in Plains, Georgia, Jack worked first in the family’s peanut warehouse before going on to college at the Georgia Institute of Technology and later Emory University. He joined the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War but was discharged after being caught smoking marijuana.
Jack’s political ambitions were matched by his father. In 2006, Jack ran for the U.S. Senate from Nevada as a Democrat but lost to Republican John Ensign. His campaign focused on healthcare reform and in opposition to the Iraq War. Jack has also had other business ventures and still remains active in public discourses about politics and social issues.
James Earl “Chip” Carter III
James Earl “Chip” Carter III was born on April 12, 1950. Like his brother Jack, Chip grew up in the public eye during his father’s presidency. He worked in the family peanut business and was a member of the Plains City Council. Chip’s political involvement is quite a thing; he worked for the Democratic National Committee, and he has been in the middle of many activities with different community organizations.
Chip’s life has not been without controversy; he made headlines for allegedly smoking marijuana with singer Willie Nelson on the roof of the White House. He has two children from his first marriage to Caron Griffin and continued to be involved in local politics and community service.
Donnel Jeffrey “Jeff” Carter
Donnel Jeffrey “Jeff” Carter was born August 18, 1952. He is the youngest son of Jimmy and Rosalynn. He studied geography at Georgia Southwestern University. After he graduated, he co-founded Computer Mapping Consultants. Carter’s new company became a consultant for such organizations as the World Bank.
Jeff has kept a relatively low profile compared to his siblings but has been involved with philanthropic work in education and technology. He is married to Annette Carter, and the couple has three kids together.
Amy Lynn Carter
Amy Lynn Carter, the youngest child of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, was born on October 19, 1967. Her father’s presidency meant she grew up in the White House, which earned the young girl a lot of attention from the media. Known for her politics activism, Amy participated in demonstrations against the U.S. foreign policy in Central America and against the apartheid regime of South Africa.
In 1995 she supplied the illustrations for her father’s children’s book The Little Baby Snoogle-Fleejer. In 1996, she married James Gregory Wentzel and later remarried to John Joseph “Jay” Kelly in 2007. Amy has one son with each husband and stays involved with the Carter Center as a board member working on issues of mental health and education.
Family legacy
The Carters have a large family with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, 22 at last count. The family often remarks on how proud they are that they have stayed close as a family through their busy lives. All of them have said how proud they are of the humanitarian work and public service their parents were dedicated to.
Over the past couple of years, Jimmy and Rosalynn have both faced health scares, and during those times, their children are the first to stand up in support. Their parents’ legacy of service continues in them through different pursuits, not only in direct political participation but also in community-related activity.
