Who is Kari Lake?
Kari Lake is an American political figure, well-acknowledged as a television news anchor and hardcore supporter of former President Donald Trump, along with being recognized for her ‘controversy-laden’ political campaigns in Arizona. Recently named director to Voice of America, created by Trump, the career trajectory of Lake has been marked by significant media presence and political ambition.
Early life and education
Kari Lake was born on August 23, 1969, in Rock Island, Illinois. She is the youngest of nine children coming from an enormous family. Her parents were Larry and Sheila Lake. Her father showed her what hard work looked like, as he had a job both as a teacher and coach; his wife was a nurse. Lake was schooled at North Scott Senior High School, Iowa, before getting a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Journalism from the University of Iowa. Growing up with a great passion for media made her get on with the journalism profession just right after graduation.
Media career
Lake began her media career in the early 1990s, when she landed an internship with KWQC-TV in Davenport, Iowa. She then quickly worked her way up through various positions with different stations, finally landing as an evening anchor with KSAZ-TV (Fox 10 Phoenix) in 1999. In her twenty years at the station, she developed a reputation for her dynamic onscreen presence and interviewed high-profile figures like Barack Obama and Donald Trump.
But her last years in journalism were embroiled in controversy. Lake became notorious for spreading misinformation on social media about COVID-19 and the 2020 presidential election. Her exit from KSAZ in March 2021 was one of those moments that switched her from journalism to politics.
Political ambitions
In June 2021, not long after she had left her anchoring job, Lake announced that she was running for governor of Arizona. Her campaign was marked by staunch adherence to Trump’s policies and rhetoric, especially on the issue of election integrity. Lake won the Republican primary but lost the general election to Democrat Katie Hobbs in November 2022. She did not concede defeat but instead continued to spread claims of election fraud.
In October 2023, Lake announced another political bid for the U.S. Senate and lost again in November 2024 to Democratic Representative Ruben Gallego. In both campaigns, she retained a devoted base of Trump supporters and remained one of the most prominent figures of the far-right movement.
Appointment as director of Voice of America
On December 11, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump announced that he would appoint Kari Lake as the new director of Voice of America to head one of the largest international broadcasters funded by the U.S. government and providing news coverage to an estimated 354 million people worldwide across multiple platforms.
Lake’s appointment is important, not only because she comes from the media, but also because she shares the same political ideology as Trump. She has publicly shared her views on immigration, education reform, and election integrity-all issues close to many conservative voters. Trump’s announcement said she would work directly with the head of the U.S. Agency for Global Media upon appointment.
Controversies and criticism
Not all of this rise for Kari Lake has come without controversy. She has been criticized for promoting those unfounded claims about election fraud by many, including fellow Republicans who wanted more traditional approaches to contests of elections. Her mode of governance has also been termed divisive. Critics have stated that her preoccupation with “fake news” narratives detracts from journalistic integrity.
While records of the infamous statements and acts during the political campaigns that Lake had engaged herself in are there, her VOA tenure has many odds to it. That remains a difficult job to do because now, while performing such responsibilities for this organization, working on different dimensions will engage her directly in practicing or delivering independent news reporting all over the world.
