Who is Stacey Williams?
Stacey Williams is a one-time model who gained notoriety in recent weeks, after accusing Donald Trump of groping her in 1993, while Jeffrey Epstein watched. Now 56, Williams has gone on to become an author and consultant, but her one-time modeling days as a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model have brought her back into the spotlight. Her allegations against Trump have stirred up, once again, his past with women and his associations with Epstein.
Early life and modeling career
Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Stacey Williams launched her modeling career in the 1990s. She gained much publicity for her appearances in Sports Illustrated and its biggest annual release, the swimsuit edition. Her fame exploded with this press, which catapulted her into supermodel status and had her running in circles with high-society power brokers, including Jeffrey Epstein.
Williams attended some high-end parties and events in her modeling days where she met many celebrities and rich people. It was during one such gathering that she came across Epstein, who was to introduce her to Trump.
Allegations against Donald Trump
The accusations from Williams came via a Zoom call organized by a group called Survivors for Kamala, in support of the presidential campaign of Vice President Kamala Harris. On that call, she recounted experiencing an incident at Trump Tower in New York City after Epstein introduced her to Trump.
Williams said this incident occurred in the early 1990s, while she was in her twenties and briefly dating Epstein. She continued to relate how Epstein had suggested they go see Trump in his office, where she said that Trump was very friendly towards her at first but soon, touching her everywhere, made her feel uneasy. Williams said, “He put his hands all over my breasts, my waist, and my buttocks,” which left her speechless and puzzled. She called it a “twisted game” between Trump and Epstein.
After that, Williams said she felt ashamed and disgusted, especially when Epstein berated her for letting Trump grope her. This incident sent her into an emotional turmoil that kept her silent all these years until she felt compelled to speak out following the #MeToo movement.
The political context
Williams timed this decision to come forward with her story rather pointedly as the 2024 presidential election approaches. She made the comments in stating it would be “her absolute worst nightmare” if Trump were to enter the White House again. The Trump campaign immediately denied the allegations, calling them “unequivocally false” and politically motivated. A suggestion was brought forward that doubt could be cast on Williams’s timing, as they came so near the election and were linked to a campaign supporting Harris.
These denials notwithstanding, Williams insists that her decision to speak out was not in concert with any political campaign, but as a function of personal experience and the desire to see some accountability where sexual misconduct allegations against powerful figures were concerned.
Public reaction and broader implications
Reaction to Williams’ accusations has been divided, reflecting further polarized American modern politics: Trump supporters dismissed her claim as a smear campaign against him, while advocates for survivors of sexual violence rallied around Williams’ courage in coming forward after so many years.
The accusations of Williams are only one addition to the mountain of accusations by several women against Trump for years on account of his alleged inappropriate behaviour. Since Trump announced his candidacy in 2015, more than two dozen women have publicly accused him of some form of sexual misconduct, which has been mostly vigorously denied by Trump and his supporters.
These new surfacing allegations against Trump raise significant questions about the way accountability for public figures is pursued amidst accusations of sexual misconduct. In sharing her story, as Williams has, during such a pivotal election period, it brings to center stage the struggle many survivors continue to face in coming forward against powerful individuals who have historically denied or marginalized such experiences.
