Big lots like some retail chains have experienced retail shifts and strategic realignment leading to closures of some of its store locations across the United States. As the retail brand continues to redefine its market presence and operational focus in America, several of its 64 store locations in New York are slated to close their doors. As expected, this change will impact the locals, particularly those close to these locations scheduled to close.

Why are big lots closing stores?

As stated in the filing by Big Lots, “ In 2024, the U.S. economy has continued to face macroeconomic challenges including elevated inflation which has adversely impacted the buying power of our customers”. In a nutshell, Big Lots is currently facing financial challenges but unlike most retail brands, Big Lots has decided to strategize to ensure that the brand survives in the long run by focusing their energy and resources to only profitable locations. New York is not the only location where its stores will be closed. In fact, some of its stores in Florida are also scheduled for closure.

Big Lots closure in Nueva York

New York with its 64 locations is one of the largest states in terms of population and retail activity. Regardless, the company is currently facing financial challenges hence, its decision to close unprofitable store locations in Nueva York.

How will Big Lots closure affect New Yorkers

Big Lots’ decision to close some of its 64 store locations in New York will affect its shoppers, particularly those near locations slated to close. Residents will face the inconvenience of finding new shopping options. This new development will not only affect daily routine but will increase the cost of sourcing and purchasing products.

Employees of the closed store locations may lose their jobs unless the company decides to move employees to other functional store locations.

CBS News reported a statement by one of the company’s spokesperson, “hard-working associates impacted by a closure, including by accepting requests to transfer to another Big Lots location, if they choose,” the spokesperson said. Workers unable to move to another store will be given severance, the spokesperson added.

While the loss of Big Lots stores in these locations will be inconvenient to shoppers, it also provides an opportunity for new business to develop and thrive in these locations.
