On August 13th to August 17th, these melons were sent to parts of Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Texas and Virginia according to the FDA. The identified melons have a label that is red and white with ‘KANDY written’ across the top and have the UPC 4050 as well as a lot number 846468.

Health risks associated with salmonella
Although no reports of illnesses have been recorded, the FDA cautions that salmonella can be a major health threat particularly for specific groups. In a report by the Food and Drug and Administration “Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems”.
Even those who are healthy may suffer from fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which might include blood) and tummy ache as symptoms of salmonella poisoning. In some rare cases however, this infection may spread into your bloodstream leading to severe conditions such as vascular infections, endocarditis or even arthritis.
What consumers should do
If you already bought the Kandy cantaloupes which have been recalled there are certain things that you must do now. According to the FDA, people from affected states who purchased these melons between August 13th to August 17th should check product labels for UPC code 4050 and lot code 846468. If the code on the one you bought happens to be a match then you must dispose immediately to avoid any risk of salmonella infection.
There hasn’t been illness reported but this doesn’t mean that consumers should take warnings lightly. In case someone has eaten one of these recalled melons and is showing any signs typical of salmonellosis, he or she must go for medical aid as soon as possible.
