IHA Beverage, based in California, is recalling its Super Dried Cinnamon Powder due to excessive lead content. This comes after the Arkansas Department of Health undertook routine sampling and found that the product contained unsafe levels of lead. The recall is the latest in a troubling series of withdrawals of cinnamon products from the market in the past year for similar reasons. The problematic cinnamon powder, which is packaged in a 4 ounce flimsy plastic bag with a red and gold colored border, bears the UPC 610232012476. As per the statement made by the Food And Drug Administration of the USA, the product was marketed within the state of California and in some stores across the country.
As of November 18, the company has suspended all distribution of the product, and no illnesses have been reported so far and the matter is under investigation. Those who purchased the item are asked to either throw It away or take It back to the store for a complete refund. Questions should be directed to IHA Beverage at 323-724-8551 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, PST.

Lead is a heavy metal that is considered toxic, and its ingestion poses great health threats. Kids are more at risk as lead is retained more in their bodies since they are still growing. The FDA reports that prolonged exposure leads to developmental impairment, learning disorders, and other conditions that are permanent. Hyperactivity, short stature, deafness, and blood deficiency are some of the symptoms in younger children. Coma, seizures, and sometimes death result from the worst exposure effects. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advocates for children who might have ingested lead to be followed medically.
Individuals are also vulnerable to the lead exposure risks. Long-term consequences are damage to kidneys, hypertension as indicated, and cognitive dysfunction. There are therefore very serious health implications and that is why it is the norm for the public health authorities to stress the need to find and control the sources of exposure.
The incident concerning the withdrawal of cinnamon powder by IHABeverages is not unique. Within the past one year, other cinnamon products have also been recalled because of high lead levels. In August, El Servidor Corp and El Chilar came into similar problems and had to issue recalls. More than twelve other companies including. La Fiesta, Marcum, MK, Swad, Supreme Tradition, Compania Indillor Orientale, ALB Flavor, Shahzada, Spice Class, La Frontera and Asli had also recalled their cinnamon products due to lead contamination. This depressing reality clearly shows that the safety of spice products is still a work in progress.

It is recommended that consumers remain alert and take care to ensure that the cinnamon they buy does not feature in any recall lists. Considering the long term health effects that lead poisoning has on children, especially young ones, it is very important to comply with recall notices. The FDA, the EPA, and other relevant institutions are active in the emergency response measures, the focus being to avert any more pollution and protect the public.
