Most recently, the cinnamon recall saga continues to unfold, making companies pull their products from store shelves, which is a result of overloading contamination. El Servidor ground cinnamon, distributed by Gutierrez, is the least affected by this. Furthermore, this also marks the sixth cinnamon recall since the start of June. This has raised alarms among consumers and regulators alike.
FDA Issues Warning on El Servidor Cinnamon
On the 19th day of August, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a direct recall on the famous El Servidor Corp brand ground cinnamon products, which has been citing potential lead to contaminated sales. According to reports from the FDA, Gutierrez Distributor of Passaic, NJ, is currently recalling the product because it might contain elevated levels of lead. The agency also emphasized that being exposed to this contamination for just a short period can be quite harmful.
Where and When Was the Product Distributed?
The report has it that the affected ground cinnamon was being distributed to retail stores in New York starting on January 14. What’s more, the product is also packaged in a 1.5-ounce clear plastic bag, which makes it easy for many consumers to identify. If you have purchased this product, then note this, “Stop using it immediately and return it to the store and obtain your full refund.
Lead Found in Routine Testing
This recall was triggered by a routine search, which was conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSAGM). This search found elevated levels of lead in the El Servidor cinnamon. The department saw this as very concerning. In response, the company has temporarily stopped production and distribution of its ground cinnamon products.
Previous recalls highlight a widespread issue.
Not so long ago, on the 13th day of August, the FDA issued a recall of El Chilar cinnamon products because of the same reason, which is elevated lead levels. However, this investigation also suggested that the contamination might as well stem from a “possible adulterated raw material from the supplier.” Due to the recurrence of these issues, it surely underscores the need for rigorous quality control in our spice industry.
The dangers of lead exposure
One fact you should note is that lead is a highly toxic substance that poses significant health risks. Furthermore, in adults, this element is capable of resulting in kidney dysfunction, high blood pressure, and neurocognitive effects.
In some extreme cases, lead poisoning could even lead to seizures, comas, and even death. Not to forget that children are vulnerable to lead exposure. It could result in health issues that include learning disorders and developmental defects. The FDA issued a warning stating that prolonged exposure to lead in children results in permanent damage to the central nervous system.
What Should You Do If You Have This Product?
If you have recently purchased El Servidor ground cinnamon, the FDA advises that you should immediately stop using this product. Most importantly, you should dispose of the product or return the product to the store you purchased it from and obtain a full refund.
