Following the strategies of other large-scale banks such as Bank of America and TD Bank, Citizen Bank is also pursuing the trend of shutting down its branches across the United States. This is occurring as the majority of customers are shifting to online and mobile banking. Here’s a look at the regions that will be closed sooner than later, and what you should do in case your local branch will be affected too.
Why is Citizens Bank closing Branches?
Citizens Bank, like many others, is adapting to how customers are now banking. Here’s why these closures are happening:
- Shift to online banking: More customers are turning to digital platforms for their banking needs, from depositing checks to managing accounts online. This reduces the demand for in-person banking services.
- Pandemic acceleration: The COVID-19 pandemic pushed many people to explore online banking options while branches were closed, and many have continued using these services.
- Branch optimization: Banks are focusing on optimizing their branch networks, closing less-used locations while investing in digital and mobile capabilities.
What should you do if your branch is closing?
If your local Citizens Bank branch is on the closure list, you still have several options to continue managing your finances without disruption:
- Use online and Mobile Banking: Citizens Bank has a robust online banking system, and their mobile app allows you to handle most transactions, including deposits, transfers, and bill payments.
- Visit a nearby branch: Even though some branches are closing, Citizens Bank will continue to operate other branches near the closing locations.
- ATM access: Many Citizens Bank ATMs will remain available, and the bank’s app can help you locate the nearest one.
- Customer service: You can still reach Citizens Bank customer service for any assistance you may need regarding your accounts.
Which Citizens Bank branches are closing?
Citizens Bank is set to close 15 branches in early 2025, with locations affected across several states. These closures are part of a larger effort to adapt to changing customer behaviors and the growing popularity of online banking. If you are a customer of Citizens Bank, you should be aware of the following locations that will be closing:
Massachusetts
- 560 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston
- 129 Samoset Street, Plymouth
- 390 Washington Street, Wellesley
- 455 Main Street, Wilbraham
Massachusetts, which has one of the highest numbers of Citizens branches in the U.S., will see several closures. However, neighboring branches and the bank’s online services will continue to serve customers.
Rhode Island
- 275 Newport Avenue, Rumford
Rhode Island, where Citizens Bank is headquartered, will see the Rumford location closing in January 2025. After this closure, the state will still have 51 branches.

- 4255 US Highway 9, Howell
- 669 Whitehead Road Extension, Lawrenceville
New Jersey has already experienced closures from other financial institutions, and now Citizens Bank will be adding to the list with these three branches shutting down.
New York
- 257-15 Union Turnpike, Glen Oaks
- 7200 Niagara Falls Boulevard, Niagara Falls
New York will see closures in both Glen Oaks and Niagara Falls. The Niagara Falls branch is one of the few remaining in the Buffalo area.

- Pennsylvania: 4265 Buffalo Road, Erie; 5142 State Route 30, Greensburg; 5301 Grove Road, Pittsburgh
These branch closures are part of a broader trend across the financial sector, as banks nationwide are reducing their physical footprint.
Despite the closures, Citizens Bank remains committed to its branch network and is planning to add standalone branches in select locations in the future. Additionally, they are continuing to invest in digital tools and platforms to enhance the customer experience.
