Due to serious safety issues, almost 90,000 fire pits under the Colsen brand have been taken off the market. The fire pits sold between January 2020 and July 2024 were associated with 31 cases of flame jetting, where flames erratically came out causing burns to 19 victims. The injuries were quite bad as some of the victims required surgical operation with two patients having degree burns on over 40% of their bodies. This risk is exacerbated when alcohol flames, which can be invisible, can be present hence making it hard to know whether or not the appliance is lit.
The recall concerns Colsen fire pits of Colsen Fire Pits, located in Miami Florida and previously made by different manufacturers. The pits were available at retail juggernauts including but not limited to Amazon, Walmart, Wayfair and more. They were priced between $40 and $90 and the fire pits were promoted as fostering both indoor and outdoor use. They were available in many shapes and designs which included one having a ‘bowl shaped design’ that contained a concrete basin for burnt liquid alcohol. The liquid alcohol, however, is highly explosive causing severe burns almost immediately after igniting.
In one notably terrifying instance, two persons were burned with third degree burns in several areas of their bodies It’s already known that in at least six instances, victims underwent a lengthy course of treatment, or suffered enduring deformities. CPSC cautioned that these items – fire pits – carry a risk of unpredictable injury even if one is one second closer to the heat of the fire. The particular company is already out of business and all users of these fire pits are advised that they are no longer safe for use.
Only option to throw the Colsen Fire Pits away
Some recalls come with a loss of damage, or recall plus repair. This recall does not provide such options for the consumers. Colsen Fire Pits discontinued sales of the fire pits in 2023, and there is no funds available for compensating consumers. CPSC recommends the users of the fire pits to throw away the item in a secure manner and refrain from selling or giving it away.
Such a recall is issued to reinforce how dangerous workplace products are that involve any type of explosive. The whirling steel balls in these fire pits do without saying are marketed for indoor and outdoor use instead their flames remain invisible. When it comes to fire pits of the Colsen make, stop using it at once and consult the CPSC for proper disposal procedures.
In light of the current recall activities, it is worth noting that the CPSC is also vigilant about product safety issues so as to prevent consumers from the use of harmful products. The importance of an effective warning is further heightened by the fact that liquid alcohol fuelled fire pits are more likely to experience dangerous occurrences such as flame jetting which occurs when the fueled fire ignites suddenly and severely. Fire Safety tips are important to remember especially when dealing with devices that utilize combustible materials.
