Costco has been a favorite with many shoppers for its bulk products and competitive prices. But as members have shared discussions on social media sites like Reddit, a number of areas for improvement have come to light. From fighting crowds to frustrations with the website and layout, Costco members have been able to share experiences and, at times, suggestions for improving their shopping experience.
Crowds: A constant challenge
One of the most frequent pain points mentioned by Costco members has to do with the rampant crowds that fill the warehouses. Many shoppers report that no matter when they go, they find long lines and crowded aisles. One Reddit user described the situation as “nuts,” explaining how checkout lines can wind halfway through the store, making things feel chaotic and stressful.
Also causing congestion is the more popular free sample stations that will form a bottle-neck as purchasers clamor to test the new products being promoted. This could be an irritant, particularly when one has limited time to navigate the warehouse. Other members have even suggested that Costco would help relieve this situation by staggering the times of availability during less busy times of the day or relocating the sampling stations to less crowded areas of the store.
Disorienting layout
One of the common gripes includes the Costco store design: the endless reshuffling of product layouts forces members to struggle more with their shopping list and searching everywhere. The consumers were probably wandering round in circles as they seek their targeted item. Eventually, it ended in unplanned or impulse purchasing—something that Costco reportedly engages in as a ploy for sales.
Members have humorously noted that it feels like a “treasure hunt” each time they go in, but this unpredictability can be frustrating. Suggestions for improvement include the provision of a store map or app feature that customers could use to input their shopping list and be provided with directions to the location of each item. This could make the shopping trip more efficient, and less time spent in-store.
Website usability issues
Members also criticized Costco’s web presence; those who find the website difficult to navigate reported the most problems getting through to a customer service representative when they have questions about online orders or membership. Among these frustrations are very long wait times on hold and unhelpful automated responses.
To answer these, members propose the redesign of the website UI should make navigation much more accessible and customer support more accessible for less hassle in the process. A live online chat or devoted line would significantly improve customer satisfaction for online purchasers.
Parking problems
Trying to park at Costco can give headaches to even the most patient. More than half of the membership indicates spending a fair amount of time in a search for an open space that becomes even tougher while going with kids or large carts filled with groceries.
Others in the Reddit forum have commented that the company should also look into improving its parking facilities or the traffic flow system within the parking area. Providing special parking for families or persons with disabilities would also be an excellent idea.
Self-checkout problems
While some places do offer self-checkout options, many members find them inconvenient and inefficient. Among the usual complaints: not enough space for bulk items, no handheld scanners, and frequent interruptions, staff interrupting to check IDs or receipts.
Members also suggested that Costco make its self-checkout experience friendlier with more technology: handheld scanning devices, so customers could scan items as they shop. Not only would this speed up checkout, but it also would alleviate some of the congestion often encountered at regular registers.
Customer behavior: Handling hostile shoppers
The thread brought some of the other shopper behaviors discussed here into the debates of members. Even long descriptions by users are given as to encounters with uncivil or uninhibited people obstructing aisles, or else getting into cart and personal-space disputes. Such can make shopping in Costco more of a stress than fun.
To combat this issue, some members suggest creating a culture of courtesy among the patrons by utilizing signs or announcements that remind customers to be mindful of their surroundings and to be respectful of others.
Improvement to be made
While Costco is always a favorite among many, the value and selection of their products can’t offset some of the glaring areas that could really use some change for the shopping experience to be lifted for its members.
Improvements of that type would have to deal with crowd control, store layouts, online services, parking facilities, self-checkout systems, and courteous customer behavior, that is, all things that really make Costco a beloved retailer able to handle swollen membership requirements.
