Headquartered in Green Bay, Wisconsin, Snapchill LLC has issued a voluntary recall for hundreds of canned coffee products out of concern for possible botulinum toxin contamination. This recall includes products sold under numerous coffee roaster names in nearly every state in the country, both through retailers and online sales.
What is the reason for the recall?
Snapchill found that their process could have potentially resulted in the growth of botulinum toxin or its production in the low-acid, canned foods produced. This is a deadly toxin that causes a type of really rare food poisoning, botulism, and can prove fatal in its effects.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration informed Snapchill that the company’s low-acid canning process was not properly registered, as required by regulations. While no illnesses have been reported, and Snapchill is unaware of any instances of actual contamination, the company is issuing this recall as a precautionary measure.
What is Botulism?
Botulism is a serious type of food poisoning caused by a toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. The toxin acts upon the nerves of the body, leading to such symptoms as:
- General weakness
- Dizziness
- Double vision
- Trouble speaking or swallowing
- Difficulty breathing
- Abdominal distension
- Constipation
Symptoms are manifested within as few as six hours and most times up to two weeks after having consumed contaminated food. Botulism is treated as a medical emergency that might result in paralysis and death if not treated promptly.
Products affected
These recalled canned coffees were sold in metal cans in sizes from 7 to 12 ounces under more than 200 different coffee roaster and brand names. Affected cans can be identified by the text “Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC” underneath the nutrition facts panel; some could also read “Snapchill Coffee” on the label.

What to do if you have the recalled coffee
If you have any of the recalled canned coffee products, do not consume them. Either destroy the product or return to Snapchill or the place of purchase for a full refund.
