Ford Motor Company has initiated a safety recall on select units of the 2023-2024 F-150 Lightning electric trucks due to an issue with the front upper control arm ball joint nut. If improperly torqued, it could cause a partial loss of steering control, leading to an accident. Here is what you need to know about this recall.
What models are affected by this recall?
If you drive a 2023 or 2024 F-150 Lightning BEV, your vehicle might be among those affected by this recall. Ford identified that the front upper control arm ball joint nut in some of these vehicles may not have been tightened properly during production.
Key details about the affected vehicles:
- Models produced between November 5, 2023, and February 13, 2024
- Approximately 11,922 units are involved in this recall
If you are not sure whether your vehicle is affected, you can contact Ford customer service or check your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the NHTSA website.
Why is this recall being issued?
Ford’s investigation unit found that a misalignment during production may have prevented the ball joint nut from being torqued correctly.
Here is why this is a concern:
- A loose or missing nut can cause the upper control arm to separate from the knuckle assembly.
- Drivers may experience vibration, and suspension movements may produce a clunking or rattling sound.
- If unaddressed, this issue can result in partial loss of steering control, significantly increasing the risk of a crash.
Ford has already reported two field cases and one warranty claim related to this issue and sadly this includes a single accident.
What will Ford do to fix the problem?
Ford has pledged to resolve this issue alone. That means if your vehicle is among those recalled, you will not be incurring any extra costs. Dealers will inspect and repair affected vehicles as follows:
- Inspect the torque on the front upper control arm ball joint nut.
- If the nut passes inspection, it will be replaced as a precaution.
- If the nut fails the inspection, both the nut and the knuckle assembly will be replaced.
You will not have to pay for these repairs. Ford will reimburse you if you have already paid out of your own pocket for similar repairs before learning about this recall notice.
When will you be notified?
Recall notification letters will be sent out from February 3, 2025, by Ford. But that does not mean you have to wait for the letter to take action. If you think that your vehicle could be among those affected, you can reach out to a local Ford or Lincoln dealership to set up an appointment for inspection.
