The Girl Scouts of the USA just announced plans to retire two beloved cookie flavors from their lineup after the 2025 cookie season. That change marks something rather sweeping for a lineup that had been tradition dear to the hearts of Americans through so many decades. Those are the Girl Scout S’mores and Toast-Yay! cookies.
Girl Scout cookie retirement overview
The announcement came as the 2025 cookie season opened on January 7, 2025. The retirement of the two flavors is part of GSUSA’s regular review process to refresh offerings and make space for new creations. A GSUSA spokesperson said, “Discontinuing Toast-Yay! and Girl Scout S’mores might just lead to something new and tasty” in the future.
Information on retiring cookies
- Girl Scout S’mores: Released during the 2017 cookie season, were an homage to the classic campfire treat with a graham cracker-flavored cookie with a chocolate and marshmallow filling; these became fast favorites with many who love cookies.
- Toast-Yay!: These iced cookies in the shape of a slice of toast with a rather peculiar yet very sensational cinnamon taste come out only a few months later, around mid-2021. It would be pretty clear that the number of years hasn’t earned him a small popularity.
The retirement of these flavors comes after a trend in the past few years when GSUSA has been regularly updating the lineup of cookies. Raspberry Rally, for example, was retired only a year after it was first introduced in 2023.
Consequences on cookie sales and Girl Scouts’ mission
Annual Girl Scout cookie sales are not an excuse for indulging in sweet treats, but rather give them a vital tool in teaching young girls some very important life skills. While selling cookies, Girl Scouts learn entrepreneurship skills; how to set goals, handle money, people, and business ethics. The funds support local councils, various activities such as camps and trips, and also give back through community service projects.
GSUSA’s Chief Revenue Officer, Wendy Lou, said: “The sweet success of each sale is a testament to how much girls can change the world when they put their minds to it.” This echoes the greater purpose of the Girl Scouts than just selling cookies.
Current lineup of cookies and most popular flavors
Although S’mores and Toast-Yay! are retiring many of the favorite flavors will continue to be sold. The following are the top five best-selling cookies:
- Thin Mints
- Samoas/Caramel deLites
- Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs
- Adventurefuls
- Peanut Butter Sandwich/Do-si-dos
These cookies are baked by two primary bakeries; ABC Bakers and Little Brownie Bakers, which explain different names for similar cookies depending on region.
How to buy cookies
Eager fans looking to get their hands on S’mores and Toast-Yay! cookies before they’re gone can do so in a few ways. Cookies can be ordered directly from local Girl Scouts through individual Digital Cookie online sales pages, or purchased at local cookie booths January through April. Beginning Feb. 21, cookies will also be available for direct shipment to homes through the Girl Scout cookies website.
With the clock ticking on their retirement, cookie lovers will have to savor these flavors while they can. The loss of Girl Scout S’mores and Toast-Yay! isn’t necessarily the end, it is, rather, one moment to glance at the new ones coming into the fold in order to please fans in coming seasons.
