GM recalls 460k cars for rear wheel lock-up – These are the affected models including Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac

GM issues major recall: transmission issues affect nearly 462,000 vehicles.

Recent Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac car owners may want to know about a recall pertaining to General Motors (GM). This recall is extensive as close to 462000 vehicles are involved and it is because of transmission complications that may lead to locking of the rear wheels. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) noted this as a potential danger, indicating that a transmission control valve that does not function properly may result in a lock-up situation, thus posing severe risks during driving. The recall does cover certain models only: the 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra truck lines, plus the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Suburban SUV lines. In case you own one such vehicle, be careful with temperatures of the valve, as it is prone to temperature changes and thermal cycling, and gets old in the end resulting in rough shifting which may eventually end up with rear wheels locking.

GM remedy for recalled vehicles

To remedy this, GM intends to offer a free installation of new transmission control module software. This software will help in monitoring the wear of the valve and notify the drivers long before it becomes a severe issue. It is worth noting that the system is able to detect the wear about 10,000 miles ahead of any chances of a lock up, and if a problem is sensed, the transmission will self restrict to only the fifth gear. This keeps the wheels from freezing and should also cause a service engine light to come on together with a reduced power message. GM will even create an additional repair program for the vehicles pinpointed with the faulty valve, reassuring the owners.

As the recall officially starts on December 9, GM is expected to begin contacting the owners of affected vehicles from this date. But you don’t have to wait—you can find out right now if your vehicle is part of the recall. Just check the NHTSA website and put in your vehicle identification number VIN or call the GM contact center. GM has also instructed its dealers not to sell any affected vehicles from the time that they are affected until they are repaired.

In case you are curious about whether you have to pay for any repair costs, the answer is no. The expense of the software installation is borne by GM, and they are certain that this solution will be as hassle-free as possible for the owners. Just bring your vehicle to a GM authorized service dealer and they will take care of it.

Don’t delay over recall

So, if you own any of the listed models, it is recommended to verify your recall status without delay. The assistance of GM customer service numbers is possible, in case there is a need for more information: Chevrolet 1-800-222-1020, GMC 1-800-462-8782, Cadillac 1-800-458-8006, and GM’s general number 1-888-988-7267. This also corresponds with the recall number which is N242454440. Feel free to contact your dealership if you have any questions or concerns.
