Due to fears of potential injuries brought about by the sunshade capable of closure without any warning, Hyundai has announced a recall affecting over 34,000 vehicles. The recall affects the 2024 Santa Fe and Santa Fe Hybrid. As classified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue is located on the rear sunshade switch knob mounted on the overhead console which can protrude out. This malfunction can cause the sunshade to close on its own in turn resulting in the risk of injury to the occupant. Hence, over 26000 Santa Fe models and about 8000 Santa Fe Hybrid models are being recalled by Hyundai.
To correct the problem, all dealerships will replace the switch knobs at no cost to consumers. Owners of these cars will be informed by mail beginning January 6, 2025. It was the NHTSA that first made the sunshade concern known and this led to the issuance of the recall that called on Hyundai to address the defect and avoid potential accidents involving the sunshade. In an effort to ensure damages for the vehicles are minimized, Hyundai is introducing a new type of switch knob that prevents the sun shade from closing by accident to be used in place of the defective ones.
Santa Fe recall
This recall is not the first that Hyundai has issued for its vehicles this year. In July, the company recalled more than 12,000 Santa Fe vehicles due to a software issue that affected the transmission control unit. This malfunction could cause the car to roll away while in park, posing a serious safety risk. The recall covered several 2023 Santa Fe models, and the company advised owners to have their vehicles inspected and repaired promptly. The software issue added to concerns about the long-term reliability and safety of some Hyundai vehicles.
In addition to the Santa Fe recalls, Hyundai also issued a recall for more than 54,000 cars in July due to a fuel pump failure. The affected vehicles included the 2019-2023 Genesis G70, 2022-2023 Hyundai Elantra N, 2022-2023 Hyundai Kona N, and 2019-2022 Hyundai Veloster N. A fuel pump failure can cause a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash, so the recall was initiated to replace the faulty pumps in these vehicles. These recalls highlight the ongoing safety concerns that Hyundai has been addressing across several of its models in 2024.
