Mazda has announced a recall of more than 150,000 units of the 2024-2025 CX-90 and 2025 CX-70 series of vehicles. This statement entails several recalls addressing concerns that may adversely affect the vehicle’s performance, safety and usability. Here is the information you need to keep in mind if you possess one of these vehicles.
Which Mazda models are affected?
The recall primarily impacts Mazda’s CX-90 and CX-70 models from recent years:
- 2024–2025 CX-90
- 2025 CX-70
Mazda owners are encouraged to confirm their vehicle’s recall status to ensure they are aware of any required updates or service needs.
Why Mazda issued the recall
Mazda’s recall affects three distinct areas, each addressing different issues related to the vehicle’s performance and safety:
- Dash Electrical Supply Unit (ESU) Malfunction
The first recall covers around 80,915 CX-90 and CX-70 models due to a possible malfunction in the Dash ESU. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the ESU failure can affect critical functions like the defroster, seat belt warning, 360-degree view monitor, and the battery cooling system. In a statement, Mazda clarified, “During vehicle startup, certain features may not function correctly,” posing a potential safety risk. - Deficiencies in Electrical Components for Engine Restarting: In addition, the third recall provides for 38,926 units CX-90 vehicles due to another software defect that makes it impossible to restart the engine after a temporary engine off-period caused by the idle-stop feature (i-stop). In instances where the engine cannot be restarted, the driver may experience an unexpected loss of control, thus escalating the dangers of crashing.
- Loss of Drive Power Due to Control Module Faults: The third recall concerns 31,488 units of CX-90 and CX-70 vehicles were control module software malfunctions might cause loss of drive power. The loss of engine power could occur rather abruptly for the affected models increasing the chances of an accident. Mazda also stated that “loss of drive power raises the crash risk.”
