Over 450,000 Portable Batteries Recalled After Fire and Burn Reports – Check if you have one of the affected models in your home

Faulty lithium-Ion batteries spark Charmast power bank recall.

Recall of approximately 488,000 Charmast power bank chargers because of safety issues regarding catching fire or burning. U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled the power banks after receiving complaints of overheating and other dangers.

Recall recalls power banks for the Charmast model W1056—all of which had been exclusively sold on Amazon from December 2018 to September 2024. These portable chargers come in all colors—from black, blue, green, mint, and pink to white—and are launched at prices ranging from $14 to $25.

CPSC has received reports of 44 power banks that have either swelled, burst into flames, melted, overheated, or given off smoke. Sadly, four people have received burns or blisters because they were using the chargers. The original problem with these power banks is the defective lithium-ion batteries, which can ignite.

According to these consumers, stop using them immediately. Get a full refund. Visit Charmast’s official refund website. To accomplish this, you need to take photos of the power bank clearly displaying the names and date on it and send a cut-off power cord to the company.

Proper disposal of recalled lithium-ion batteries

Therefore, a very necessary precaution, safe disposal of the recalled power banks, happens to be possible as the flawed lithium-ion batteries are dangerous. Consumers should take these devices to the recycling center and appropriate facility for damaging lithium batteries, rather than throwing them into the common waste, oceans, and battery recycling boxes for everyday use.

The recall suggests the more important issue of the general safety of lithium-ion batteries. According to the CPSC reports, incidents with defective lithium-ion batteries increased exponentially in recent years. It’s not only portable chargers but also e-scooters and e-bikes that have seen such batteries tied to numerous fires and injuries and over a dozen deaths.

Lithium-ion batteries can reignite even after the fire is out, which goes to show how serious the matter is. While the public is invited to submit a report to the CPSC with regard to any malfunction or safety issues, a report could reduce the chances of future accidents.

This recall is a tremendous reminder of what defective lithium-ion batteries can do and what proper safety measures should be taken when using these devices and disposing of them.
