Recall of more than 1,000 packages of onions that may be “contaminated with salmonella” at a trendy grocery chain – These are the affected states

Green onions sold at major retailers, including Trader Joe's, have been recalled in 11 states due to potential salmonella contamination.

Salmonella contamination has led to a recall of more than 1,000 packages of green onions from a trendy grocery chain, including the popular retailer Trader Joe’s. Here’s what you need to know about the recall and which states are affected.

Why the recall was issued

On October 18, Church Brothers LLC recalled 1,271 cases of green onions after a product sample tested by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency showed evidence of Salmonella. The affected green onions were distributed across the United States and Canada and sparked fears over the health risks associated with the recalled product. Trader Joe’s and other major retailers were also impacted, and as a precaution, products were removed from the store’s shelving.

States affected by the recall

The green onions in question were shipped to stores across eleven U.S. states. If you live in one of these states, it’s important to check your groceries for the recalled products:

  • Alabama
  • California
  • Connecticut
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • New York
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia

If you have purchased green onions from Trader Joe’s recently, specifically the “Trader Joe’s Green Onion Iceless 24 x 6oz,” you should be especially cautious. The onions in these states are suspected to be part of the potentially contaminated batch.

Why salmonella is dangerous

Salmonella poses a significant risk to infants, the elderly, and those who are immunocompromised. In some incidents, these infections have resulted in death. You may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps following salmonella poising. If you have eaten the recalled green onions and have these signs, please see a doctor right away.

While this recall is directed primarily on green onions, it is also connected with a more general concern about salmonella cases in the last few months. Just before this recall, for instance, there was another salmonella outbreak linked to chicken eggs by Milo’s Poultry Farms and Tony’s Fresh Market. This earlier outbreak was responsible for 65 illnesses and 24 hospitalizations across nine states.

What to do if you have the recalled products

In case you think you have the recalled green onions in your possession, it is advisable that you throw them out or take them back to the seller where you bought them from. Church Brothers Farms can assist you with further details. The Company has launched a toll-free number for consumers which is 1-877-590-0428, and it is operational from 8 AM to 4 PM PST. You can also contact them via their email address consumerinfo@churchbrothers.com for further assistance.

Take care, and ensure to check your groceries thoroughly, especially if you reside in any of the affected states. The dangers presented by salmonella are significant, hence it is important to act quickly in order to safeguard your wellbeing.
