Recall over spice that could “cause death”. What you need to know

Recall issued for Hickory Jerky kits due to hidden spices and allergens.

Con Yeager Spice Company has recalled its Hickory Jerky Kits due to a serious risk that could affect consumers with allergies, arising from their packaging error. This Pennsylvania-based company has confirmed that certain kits, which were labeled Hickory Jerky Kits, actually contained the contents of the Trail Bologna Meat Processing Kit, thus containing undeclared allergens, including wheat and soy. These allergens were absent from the label of the product, and this creates a potential health hazard for people who are sensitive or allergic to them.

The issue emerged after a customer said he received Trail Bologna interiors inside a Hickory Jerky Kit box. In view of this finding, the company initiated a voluntary recall and notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October. On December 6, the FDA classified this recall under Class I, the heaviest type of recall. This classifies recalls based on the definition of the FDA as sometimes requiring this upon a determination: Class I recalls are issued when there is a ”reasonable probability” that exposure to a product could cause serious or even deadly consequences.

Health risks, impacted products, and consumer guidance

The importance of the health risks prompted by the misspeaking kits has been emphasized by the FDA. “Individuals who are allergic or have an extremely sensitive reaction to soy and wheat could face serious or even deadly allergic reactions if this product is consumed,” says the FDA in its recall notice on October 21. The warnings come in to show the underlying essentialness of appropriate labeling and awareness among consumers, more especially to those people managing food allergies.

The recall covers Hickory Jerky Kits sold in 17.88-ounce pouches UPC 797442404137, lot number B241851006, best by February 8, 2027. In the 10 states, the affected products have been distributed, namely Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Con Yeager Spice Company has encouraged both its distributors and consumers to go and check their Hickory Jerky Kit boxes for products that may have Trail Bologna kit contents.

In the eventuality that these products are found, the company recommends calling for a return and replacement. A proactive measure in case an allergic reaction occurs, Con Yeager also sends out a reminder to distributors to inspect their shipments and promptly correct issues.

Commitment to consumer safety

The prompt response of the company makes a clear statement on the importance of consumer safety. The packaging error may seem trivial, but it can cause dire consequences for those allergic to wheat or soy. The fact that this recall has received a Class I from the FDA is an indication of how serious the matter is, as well as the extent of risks that undeclared allergens present. Con Yeager Spice Company is also encouraging customers who have Hickory Jerky Kits to check their products for any discrepancies and report them immediately.

The company has customer support teams on standby to help with inquiries and provide assistance with product returns. By cooperating with distributors and customers, Con Yeager would ensure that affected kits are withdrawn from the market as fast as possible. This incident is a stark reminder of the importance of proper labeling when it comes to public health.
