Since the commencement of 2024, Rite Aid has closed a series of stores due to bankruptcy. After filing for bankruptcy last year, Rite Aid has again announced the closure of another 44 stores as part of its restructuring process.
Bankruptcy and store closures
The company has been struggling with mounting debt and declining sales, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pressures led Rite Aid to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2023, initiating a comprehensive restructuring process to stabilize the business. Unfortunately, as part of these efforts, the company has had to make difficult decisions, including closing numerous stores.
The latest round of closures was detailed in two filings with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey. In a filing on August 5, 2024, Rite Aid revealed that 11 stores would be closing. This was followed by another filing on August 9, 2024, which added 33 stores to the closure list, bringing the total number of stores slated for closure to 44.
