As concerns about the potential listeria contamination, Fresh Express had to recently recall ready-to-eat chicken Caesar salad kits distributed across several states. The recall includes Fresh Express Gourmet Cafe Chicken Caesar Salad Bowls and is linked with chicken products from BrucePac who reported possible listeria risk sometime in the early days of October. The regrettable kits were made available in well-known retail brands including Aldi, Albertsons, Price Chopper, and Shop Rite among others, and that are the back bone of California, Texas, Louisiana as well as Washington states. The packages carry “use by” dates of October 26th, 27th and 30th and November 2nd respectively.

In mid-October,such meat producers as BrucePac, also expanded the meat recall by an additional 1.7 million pounds due to the previous reach-in recall whereby products were sent out to schools across the country. This was in addition to a 10 million pound recollection of ready-to-eat meat shipped to supermarkets and fast food chains including Costco, Trader Joe’s, Target and Kroger that was announced by the firm on October 9. This widespread recall was implemented after routine screenings found listeria bacteria in chicken items that were manufactured from may 31 to October 8 at the company’s plant in Durant, Oklahoma.

The current series of recalls is unrelated to the Boar’s Head deli meat listeria outbreak from earlier this year, which led to 59 cases and 10 deaths. That outbreak was tied to a Virginia plant, and since then, Boar’s Head has permanently shut down the facility and discontinued its liverwurst product, where listeria was initially discovered. This outbreak represents one of two significant listeria-related incidents this year, following a queso fresco and cotija cheese contamination in February that resulted in two deaths and 26 illnesses.

This onion recall has no connection with the recent warnings concerning listeria, however, it demonstrates how food borne illnesses and associated recalls have become a matter of concern in recent times.
