In a massive safety recall, Stanley announced that about 2.6 million of its popular travel mugs, namely DEWALT, STANLEY and CRAFTSMAN models, would be voluntarily recalled from consumers. This is taken after reports of possible burn hazard in these products were henceforth the action of the company in conjunction with the CPSC.
Nature of the hazard
This recall involves a critical design problem in the lid of the said travel mugs. According to Stanley, the threads on the lids can shrink once the latter are exposed to heat combined with torque, which could make the lids detach during use. This defect presents a serious burn hazard to consumers in case hot liquids may spill unexpectedly. The CPSC reported that a total of 91 global complaints about this issue had been received by Stanley. Of those, 16 were from the United States.
Most distressing of all, these incidents have accounted for 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two within the U.S., 11 of which required medical interventions.
Affected models and identification
The DEWALT, STANLEY and CRAFTSMAN models are three of the major product lines involved in this recall. The mugs were sold in several colors, including white, black, and green, in 12-ounce, 16-ounce, and 20-ounce sizes. These were double-walled stainless steel mugs with a polypropylene lid. They were sold at major retailers including Amazon, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target between June 2016 and December 2024.
Consumers can tell if their mug is included by looking for specific product identification numbers that are printed on the bottom of the mugs:
