In May, the Massachusetts-based grocery chain first announced its plans to close underperforming stores. Despite the closure, it is believed the company still “holds a strong market position in the Northeast.” According to the company, all the locations marked for closure in NY, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Rhode Island will be closed on or before the 2nd of November. Other Stop & Stop store locations will still be in full business and affected employees will be offered other positions within the company.
Stop & Shop
Stop & Shop is a retail store chain that was first opened in Somerville, Massachusetts in 1914. The store has grown over time and has recorded a total of 400 grocery stores and 60,000 employees so far. This retail store is owned by Ahold Delhaize who is a Dutch-basedDutch-based company. They also own the Giant Food, Food Lion, and Hannaford grocery chains and lots more.
According to the company, despite the closure, the Massachusetts-based store chain will still have 91 stores in New York and more than 350 across the five-state area. In a news release, the president of Stop & Shop, Gordon Reid expressed that the pride of the grocery store for its successful ties with the communities. “Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community ties we have developed as a neighborhood grocer of more than 100 years.
Reason Behind the Closures
The owner of the grocery company, Ahold Delhaize recently announced that 32 Stop & Shop stores across the five states will be closed by November 2.
According to Gordon Reid the president of Stop & Shop, the closures are due to underperformance, “Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”
