The definitive map of the most popular Halloween candies in each state – Top Trick-or-Treaters will surprise you

Candy Store researchers scrutinized candy purchases across the country and incorporated the years 2007 and 2023

Halloween is just around the corner and so is a day of exciting outfits, eerie home decor and loads of sweets. But, if you are that person who wishes to wow the kids in costume this year, knowing popular Halloween candies by US states would help in deciding which candy should make it to the treat bowl.

Candy Store researchers scrutinized candy purchases across the country and incorporated the years 2007 and 2023. This concerns the sale of the sweets before the All Hallows’ Eve, which showed the most popular candies in each state.

What are the top Halloween candies in the U.S.?

According to the data, the following are the top ten Halloween candies that Americans seem to adore:

  1. M&M’s
  2. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
  3. Sour Patch Kids
  4. Skittles
  5. Starburst
  6. Hot Tamales
  7. Candy Corn
  8. Hershey Kisses
  9. Hershey Mini Bars
  10. Butterfinger

Which states prefer M&M’s?

When it comes to chocolate, M&M’s takes the crown as the most popular candy in the United States. Nine states, including Oregon, Vermont, and Washington, named M&M’s as their top choice. In fact, six states listed them as their second favorite, and four more put them in third place.

Did you know that M&M’s became popular during World War II? Soldiers found them convenient to carry and enjoy, and their appeal has clearly stood the test of time.

Where do Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups fit in?

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are a fan favorite as well, landing in second place nationally. States like Wyoming, New Hampshire, Kentucky, and Florida have claimed this chocolate and peanut butter combination as their favorite. While many states chose it as their second or third choice, it is interesting to note that Pennsylvania – home to the Reese’s brand – did not pick it as their favorite.

Why are Sour Patch Kids so popular?

For those who prefer non-chocolate treats, Sour Patch Kids take the lead. These gummy candies are adored in seven states, including Texas, New York, and Illinois. Four other states also ranked them as their second favorite candy. Sour Patch Kids, which originated in Canada in the late 1970s, made their way to the U.S. in 1985 and have remained a staple in Halloween bags ever since.

The candy corn debate

Finally, let us not forget about candy corn. This treat often sparks a love-it-or-hate-it debate, but it still managed to find its way into the top 10 favorite candies. Whether you enjoy it or find it a little too sweet, candy corn is a classic that many people expect during Halloween.

Knowing the most popular Halloween candies by state can help you decide what to stock up on for this spooky season. Whether you choose to go with the crowd favorites or stick to your personal tastes, enjoy the festivities.
