A substantial data breach happened in 23andMe’s server in October 2023 which  led to the exposure of millions of its customers’ personal records, files, and genetic information of its users. This data breach did not only impact a few persons but around 6.9 million worldwide when the company’s relative finder tool was hacked. If you are a victim, then there is some  good news for you because you can share in the recent $30m the company is paying as settlement. Even if you are affected, you still need to know how you can also get a part of this consolation prize for yourself.

What happened during the data breach?

The breached data was first reported by 23andMe back in December 2023. The information stolen included names, genetic data as well as other personal details. Notably, users with Chinese or Ashkenazi Jewish lineage were their main target groups  and unfortunately, the stolen details are currently circulated in the dark web. When this incident was exposed, a class one action suit was filed in San Francisco requesting for accountability and compensation for the damage.

The settlement breakdown

The total payment agreed in the settlement is $30m, which will be paid by 23andMe. Additionally, you need to understand how this money will be distributed by 23andMe. Compensation to users is only $5M while the rest of the money goes into lawyer charges among other legal costs. Below is a simple breakdown if you want to know about your share:

  • Extraordinary claims: If you experienced financial fraud as a result of the breach of data and you made a filing known as “extraordinary claim,” then there is a possibility that you will get up to $10,000. This $10,000 payment is for people who were significantly affected. The amount is meant to reveal the extent of harm caused to users.
  • Standard claims: If you didn’t suffer financial fraud but you were still, in one way or another, affected by the breach, you can expect a much smaller payout of around $100. While this amount may not feel sufficient given the circumstances, it’s still a step towards accountability.

Protecting yourself moving forward

Aside from the monetary settlement, 23andMe must up its cyber security procedures. However, persons whose data was lost will have the option to enroll for a “Privacy and Medical Shield Genetic Monitoring“. This service is aimed at preventing any chances of user identities being stolen again by fraudsters thus these bewleaving users with a slight sense of security.

How to file your claim

After the court has accepted the settlement offer, 23andMe will make a separate webpage for the class-action settlement. For those who feel they are qualified to  receive compensation, you will follow that portal. This portal will provide you with the information on how to apply for your compensation including what you need to have, like your documents, forms, and any other important information related to your account and how the recent data theft has affected your life.
