Stating this October, families across the U.S. will see an increase in their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA). Some families will be able to receive as much as $1,756, which will provide the much needed financial relief during tough times. However not everyone is qualified for this financial relief.
What is the SNAP COLA increase, and how does it impact benefits?
The Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA) is used to cushion the effect of inflation to make sure the SNAP payments made to beneficiaries are still relevant. With the new adjustment, SNAP payment will increase and households of 8 members will receive up to $1,756.
This new adjustment is very crucial as it will relief most families of the financial strain caused by the high cost of food. So the COLA helps to make sure that families continue to maintain their purchasing power especially with the high cost of groceries.
Which families are eligible for the maximum SNAP benefit?
Not every family across the U.S. is eligible to receive this payment. The $1,756 payment amount is specifically for households with eight or more members. For smaller households, the benefit is lower, but each additional household member beyond eight can increase the benefit by $220.
Eligibility for SNAP is determined by several factors which includes the household size, income, and assets. Generally, a household is required to fall below a certain income limit, especially below the federal poverty level. Households without an elderly or disabled member must have assets below $2,750, while households with elderly or disabled members can have asset limits of up to $4,500.
What are the new work requirements for SNAP in 2024?
The new work requirement starting this October is that adults between the ages of 53 and 54 need to work for 80 hours each month. This age is an extension of the current requirements for adults which is from 18 – 52 and some groups like pregnant women, veterans and others who are caring for children under the age of 18 are not included in this work requirement.
How can you claim the new SNAP benefits?
If you are already receiving snap benefits, these increases will be applied automatically. That means you will not need to take any extra steps. But make sure your household information is up to date with your state’s SNAP office especially when your income or household size has changed. When you update your details it will help you receive the right payment.
If you are not enrolled in SNAP yet, but you believe you can be eligible then you can apply online through the SNAP portal of your state or you do it in person at your local SNAP office. Also, you will have to provide the proof of your income, household size and residency in order to complete your application.
What can SNAP benefits be used for?
SNAP payment is meant to support families in purchasing essential grocery items. Each family will receive their payment through the Electronic Benefit Transfer Card (EBT) which is similar to the regular credit card. You can then use it to purchase groceries like:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Meat, poultry, and fish
- Dairy products
- Breads and cereals
- Seeds and plants for home gardening
