The federal government initiated the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly food stamps, to provide food assistance to low-income citizens. From August 1, 2024, the maximum SNAP benefits will experience changes due to an increased inflation rate. The range of benefits is now between $291 and $581, based on the state and the household size. This month, Alaska will get the biggest SNAP payments, as rural beneficiaries will receive $581 per person. Also, a person can receive up to $375 in the US Virgin Islands.
However, most people in the 48 states will receive $291, and about 25 states will pay their SNAP payments to beneficiaries within the first 10 days of August.
US citizens must meet the 2024 SNAP eligibility criteria before receiving SNAP benefits. $291 will be received using the EBT debit card, which can be used to purchase groceries from any store in the US. To ensure these benefits reach all beneficiaries in all US states, the government has scheduled different dates for residents of each state to receive the payment.
SNAP 2024 Eligibility Criteria
There are certain criteria an individual or citizen must meet to be able to get access to this benefit. Ensure you meet all these requirements before applying for the $291 or a higher range of SNAP benefits.
- All intended beneficiaries must be permanent residents of the United States.
- Applicants must meet the income requirements. Generally the gross monthly income must be at 130% of poverty level. Further net income must be at or below the poverty line. Where there is a household member over 60 or is disabled only the net income requirement need be met.
- Asset requirements: households without a member aged 60 or older or who has a disability must have assets of $2,750 or less, and households with such a member must have assets of $4,250 or less.
These criteria must be met, as the Department of Agriculture will calculate the primary total income of the family or individual. Once you’ve checked all the boxes, the US Department of Agriculture will consider you qualified to receive up to $291 or more in SNAP benefits.
