Legislative progress and bipartisan support
By voting 73-27 on December 18, 2024, the Senate advanced the Social Security Fairness Act, one of the few pieces of legislation with bipartisan support in Congress. The vote set up a final passage before the Congress adjourns for the year. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the bill would make certain that no American who has contributed to Social Security has their earned benefits taken away unfairly.

Proponents of the bill believe that such changes are crucial in ascertaining financial security for all who have served with distinction in communities. To this regard, Senator Elizabeth Warren pointed out that “workers should be able to count on retirement benefits they earn over a lifetime of work.”
Concerns and opposition
While the Social Security Fairness Act was gaining momentum, there is opposition mainly from a number of Republican senators who oppose this citing this adds to the federal deficit. Critics cite a repeal of these provisions that will cost about $200 billion over a decade and undermine the solvency of the Social Security Trust Fund.
