Americans who depend on Social Security payments to get through each month would have to look for alternative means or create an alternative arrangement that will help cushion the effect of going five months without a Social Security check-in 2025.
This is coming after it was revealed in the payment schedule for 2025. As such, citizens would not receive social security checks in February, March, June, September, and November.
What are SSI checks?
The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) represents one of the payments made monthly by the Social Security Administration of the United States. The payment is aimed at citizens who have minimal resources, are blind, and are at least 65 years. The benefits can also be enjoyed by children who have disabilities or are blind.
The checks have been instrumental in reducing the living expenses of those who receive them, as the payment has been monthly, with each recipient receiving up to $943. The payments come in five forms, on different days of each month.
Some recipients receive their SSI checks depending on the day of their birth each month, with retirees, survivors, and disabled persons receiving them on Wednesdays of the week they have their birthdays.
Why is there a change in the payment schedule in 2025?
The change in the payment schedule of SSI checks in the year 2025 will come into effect in the following year. However, there hasn’t been an official statement detailing the reason for the change in the payment schedule by the Social Security Administration, which is charged with handing out social security checks to the individuals who are to receive them as benefits every month in the US.
More than this, there have been speculations that the cost of living adjustment (COLA) could be pegged between 2.6% and 3.2% in the coming year. This figure will end up being the lowest it has been in the last five years, with that of the last three years being 5.9%, 8.7%, and 3.2 in 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively.
It is also important to note that the COLA is usually granted to help recipients of the checks keep up with the effects of inflation each year. The final amount of the increase in the cost of living adjustment will remain unknown until it is revealed in October.
The change in COLA will see individuals receive $968 at a 2.6% increase rate or $973 at a 3.2% rate. Couples will receive $1,452 at a 2.6% rate and $1,460 at a 3.2% rate. Essential persons will get to receive $484 at the 2.6% rate and $487 at the 3.2% rate.
