The Social Security Administration (SSA) is implementing a new rule requiring all Social Security online service users to use Login.gov accounts. Individuals who signed up for social security before September 18, 2021, will be automatically transferred to the Login.gov platform.
According to Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley, this adjustment simplifies the login process and offers more secure online access. The move to Login.gov is intended to streamline the process and enhance the user experience across different government agencies.
If you already have a Login.gov account, no further action is required. However, for those who still need to transition to Login.gov or another government-approved authenticator such as ID.me, it’s essential to do so as soon as possible. This requirement applies to users who created Social Security accounts before September 18, 2021, and who log in using a username instead of their email address. These accounts will be phased out starting September 2024, so it’s highly recommended to set up an account with Login.gov or ID.me promptly.
Login.gov provides a convenient, secure, and private way to access various U.S. government organizations using a single account.
ID.me, another reliable option for verification, serves as a unified provider for online identity validation and verification, meeting the criteria set by the U.S. government. ID.me has partnered with 16 federal agencies to simplify the login process. It is the only option for users outside the U.S. If you had a mySocialSecurity account before moving abroad, you must create an ID.me credential to access it from an international location.
How to avoid your Social Security account being closed
To avoid closing your account, you must use login.gov or ID.me. This can be done in a few steps;
- Sign in to the Social Security page. Upon logging in, those with soon-to-be outdated accounts will be prompted with an option to transfer to the Login.gov system or ID.me.
- Select your preferred system. You will be redirected to the Login.gov or ID.me sign-in page.
- If you already have an account, log in with your email address and password. Otherwise, create a new account using your email.
- Set up a multi-factor authentication method.
Setting up an online Social Security account through the SSA is a wise decision, whether you qualify for benefits or are still many years away from retirement. It’s cost-free and secure and enables you to estimate your benefits, monitor your earnings history, or request a replacement Social Security card. Having an account lets you get notifications online and establish alerts for important updates. Activating your account can also assist in preventing fraud and identity theft.
