Social Security Update: In 16 days the SSI direct payment will be out for the month of February

Find out when you will receive your payment and how much you can expect to get.

If you are waiting on your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment for February, there is good news—it is coming earlier than usual. Payments that are normally made on the first of the month will instead be deposited on the last business day of January. That means you can expect your February payment in just 16 days, on Friday, January 31, 2025.

Here is everything you need to know about this upcoming payment, including who qualifies, how much you will receive, and why the date has changed.

Why is the February SSI payment coming early?

Normally, SSI payments are made on the first of the month. The Social Security Administration (SSA) sometimes makes exceptions to this rule, however, if the first of the month falls on either a weekend or a federal holiday. Payments are made earlier than expected to ensure that you receive your money on time without having to wait.

Because February 1, 2025, lands on a Saturday, payment will therefore be made on Friday, January 31, 2025.

How much will you receive in February?

The amount you receive depends on your status and eligibility. For 2025, the following payment amounts apply, factoring in the latest cost-of-living adjustment (COLA):

  • Individuals: $967
  • Couples: $1,450
  • Essential persons: $484

If you qualify for SSI, you can expect to see these amounts deposited directly into your bank account or loaded onto your Direct Express card on January 31.

Who qualifies for SSI payments?

Here are the people that qualify for SSI payment:

  • Age or disability: You must be aged 65 or older, blind, or disabled.
  • Financial need: Your income and resources must fall within the limits set by the SSA.
  • U.S. residence: You must live in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands.

If you are already receiving SSI benefits, there is nothing you need to do to receive your February payment. It will be processed automatically.

When should you expect your payment?

Mark your calendar for Friday, January 31, 2025. The SSA has a consistent track record of issuing payments on time, so you can expect to receive your money on that day. Payments are usually made via:

  • Direct deposit into your bank account.
  • Direct Express Debit Card, for those who use the SSA’s card service.
  • Get your check via mail, although this option might take longer to arrive.

You may need to contact your bank or the SSA if you do not receive your payment by the end of the day on 31 January.

What should you do if your payment is late?

Delays rarely happen, but they do occur sometimes, and you can follow the procedures below in case you miss your payment as expected:

  • Visit your bank or Direct Express account to check if your payment has been credited.
  • Wait one more business day. Process time can sometimes vary.
  • If your payment is still missing, you can contact the SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213.
