The social security payment for September is set to be rolled out in 4 days. This will see disabled and elderly Americans receive their usual monthly support from the government

The Social Security check usually sent out monthly ensures that eligible citizens can afford basic living expenses by making $943 – $1,415 available to those who qualify, as outlined by the Social Security Administration.

The individuals who receive the payment must be either disabled or above the age of 65 and must be citizens of the United States. These are not the only qualifications needed; however, these merely represent the first set of requirements set by the SSA.

How is the payment calculated?

The monthly payment is usually reviewed yearly, with the total amount for each year disclosed in the last month (December) of the preceding year. The payment is mostly calculated and determined by the Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA).

The expected inflation rate determines the cost of living adjustments; once this has been determined, the total payment for the year will be ascertained. Presently, the payment amount ranges from $943 for individuals to $1415 for couples who both qualify. The cost of this current payment increased by 3.2%, and this was because of the rise in inflation for the year 2024. The payments for couples rose significantly from $1317 to $1,415.

The payment is also open to Americans classified under the Essential Persons category—that is, people who provide care to the elderly or disabled citizens who receive this payment monthly.

What are the criteria for receiving the payment?

The monthly payment has been tailored to suit the needs of individuals who are either disabled or aged 65 and older. Therefore, the first category of qualifications is that one must either be disabled or be 65 years of age or older in addition to being a citizen of the United States.

More than this, the following qualifications must also be taken into consideration:

  • Recipients must have a limited income or be retired.
  • The payment is also open to non-citizens. However, they must be able to meet the criteria needed for receiving the payment, as specified by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Recipients must have granted the SSA the privilege to access their financial records to ascertain payment eligibility.
  • The applicant must have completed their application before the payment is rolled out in September.
