The Social Security Administration (SSA) will be disbursing benefits to over 70 million beneficiaries in August. According to the Social Security (SSA) payment schedule, the first round of payments in August was received on Friday, August 2nd, by the SSI beneficiaries and people who started receiving benefits before May 1997. The next round of payment is expected to come on the second Wednesday of August, which means that a whole week will go by without any Social Security benefits disbursement.
This is because August started on Thursday, leaving the following week as the first in August which does not fit into the SSA payment schedule. This, however, doesn’t happen in all months as most SSI beneficiaries usually receive their payment during the first week of the month.
SSA payment schedule for August
The Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a specific payment schedule to distribute benefits to retirees. The SSA typically sends out payments on the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month. The day you receive your check depends on your birthday.
- If your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of the month, your payment will be sent on the second Wednesday.
- If your birthday falls between the 11th and 20th of the month, your payment will be sent on the third Wednesday.
- If your birthday falls between the 21st and 31st of the month, your payment will be sent on the fourth Wednesday.
For August 2024, this means the payment dates are as follows:
- August 2: For beneficiaries who started receiving benefits before May 1997 or receiving both Supplemental Security Income and Social Security benefits.
- August 14: For beneficiaries with birthdays between the 1st and 10th.
- August 21: For beneficiaries with birthdays between the 11th and 20th.
- August 28: For beneficiaries with birthdays between the 21st and 31st.
The reason why Social Security payments will not be launched in the first week of August
The month started on Thursday and the SSI beneficiaries were paid on Friday, August 2. The Social Security Administration will not be sending in any payments for the first week of August as the schedule is not in favor of the first week.
Moving forward, later this month, SSI recipients will get another payment for September slightly earlier than would usually be expected. This is because the usual payment date of September 1 falls on a weekend.
“We do this to avoid putting you at a financial disadvantage and make sure that you don’t have to wait beyond the first of the month to get your payment,” the SSA said in a blog post. “It does not mean that you are receiving a duplicate payment in the previous month, so you do not need to contact us to report the second payment.”
The amount received by Social Security recipients is based on different factors, such as the individual’s or household income as well as the age at which the benefits were claimed.
