Where is my refund: what is the web page and how does the IRS site work to file taxes online and receive refunds faster?

To facilitate that process for filers to electronically file and expedite the refund process, the IRS has made the “Where is my Refund" and the IRS2Go app.

Filing for the 2025 tax filing season started on January 27. Filers can barely wait to get their returns in quickly and efficiently keep tabs on refunds. To facilitate that process for filers to electronically file and expedite the refund process, the IRS has made the following tools and services available:

IRS E-File: Ease in tax filing

The IRS e-filing system is called e-file. E-file is a fast, easy, and secure way to file a tax return.

Three options are available to the taxpayers for e-filing:

  • IRS free file: Free tax preparation and filing, if AGI is $84,000 or less in 2024, in partnership with private-sector companies.
  • IRS direct file: An expanded program currently in 25 states, that will enable taxpayers to prepare and e-file federal returns directly through the IRS website free of charge.
  • Authorized E-File providers: Those tax professionals accepted into the IRS e-filing program who are authorized to prepare, transmit, and process electronically filed returns.

It not only smoothes the processing, but there is less error on account of inherent error-detection features; the return comes out to be more accurate.

Refund speedup with E-Filing and direct deposit

E-filing of one’s return and opting for direct deposit can really expedite the process of a refund. According to the Internal Revenue Service, most taxpayers who e-file and opt for direct deposit get their refunds within 21 days.

On the other hand, refunds associated with paper returns take many weeks to get processed thereby delaying the actual refunds.

Tracking your refund: ‘Where’s My Refund?’ tool and IRS2Go app

The IRS has a “Where’s My Refund?” tool on IRS.gov and the IRS2Go mobile app. This will give the status of your refund within 24 hours after receiving an e-filed return. For using these tools you will require the following:

  • Your filing status, such as single or married filing jointly
  • The actual refund amount claimed in the return

The “Where’s My Refund?” tool shows the status of your refund. It will tell if your refund has been received, if it has been approved, and when a refund is issued. In general, status updates will refresh nightly, so there’s no need to check the tool more than once every 24 hours.

Key considerations for seamless filing

Common pitfalls to avoid: Make sure that the personal information entered, including SSN and bank account numbers for direct deposit, is accurate. Double-check math, making sure everything is provided to ensure no delay in processing.

Watch for changes in tax law: First, keep in mind that changes in tax law or filing requirements may apply to your return. For example, new filing requirements for gig workers and small-business owners have come into practice this year.

Free filing options: Exist for those who qualify, which will save in preparation costs if using IRS Free File or expanded Direct File programs.

It would also ensure that the refund amount meant for the taxpayer is processed smoothly and with speed by the IRS through an e-file, accessing the “Where’s My Refund?” tool, and the IRS2Go app.
