Powerful Hurricane Milton churned its way toward Florida, but one man’s story would intrigue locals and be passed around on social media alike: Joseph Malinowski, affectionately known as “Lieutenant Dan” after the nickname from Forrest Gump, is resilient and determined. He rode out the storm on his sailboat. The story of Malinowski is one of survival, bravery, and a connection with an unexpected community rallying around him in time of crisis.
The man behind the nickname
Joseph Malinowski, a lively, charismatic 54-year-old native of Tampa, became “Lieutenant Dan” to thousands of followers on TikTok after a chance encounter with creator Terrence Concannon. Malinowski’s life had taken a dramatic turn when he lost his leg at age 16 in a car accident and then developed a particularly distinctive philosophy on life and obstacles. After years homeless, Malinowski felt safest, freest, on his docked 20-foot sailboat in Bay Harbor.
That was a move that garnered both worry and admiration in return, as he chose to stay on his boat with the approach of Hurricane Milton. Even with the locals warning him of the storm surge and high wind, Malinowski confidently said he would only leave his vessel if it starts to break apart. To many within the virtual space following him, such determination means much.
At one point, while Hurricane Milton passed northward off the Florida coast, it reached Category 4 status with wind gusts reaching as high as 145 mph. The storm brought about the mass exodus of people and emergency preparations across the state. Malinowski, however, remained undaunted by these warnings, determined to ride out the storm on his boat.
He posted videos to social media, believing being on the water was far safer than hunkering down dry. “If water gets in the boat, it’ll float,” he said in one video, oozing out much confident feeling in his sailing abilities. Attitudes in that respect earned him a lot of followers on TikTok-people in awe of his determination and another idea.
The fury of the storm
On October 9, 2024, Hurricane Milton tore through Florida, striking land just short of Siesta Key. Consequently, over 2 million people were in the dark, and the heavy flooding had further destroyed infrastructures.
Meanwhile, all that chaos unraveling, Malinowski stayed on his sailboat. He let people know he was safe through the updates on TikTok because the storm was bad for navigation. Many people were concerned about his well-being but simultaneously fascinated with his adventurous spirit.
Community support and viral fame
Malinowski’s story went viral on the social media platforms after Concannon had documented the events on a number of viral TikTok videos. Hashtags such as #LieutenantDan trended to see how he was doing during the storm. Concannon also started a GoFundMe page to help Malinowski get a bigger boat once Hurricane Milton passed.
This community support brought out how social media could facilitate means of connection and help in an emergency. As donations streamed in, Malinowski spoke of his amazement at the generosity of strangers who seemed to have embraced him.
Surviving Hurricane Milton
With the storm past and daylight coming to Florida, it was reported that Malinowski didn’t get any scuff marks from Hurricane Milton, and his boat was still in one piece-testimony to both the boat and his sailing experience.
In post-hurricane interviews, Malinowski could say with a grin, “I slept through it,” he said-after clarifying, of course, that while his vessel had ridden out the storm, he had felt safe. And to many who followed him closely, his resilience resonated.
