You can get your transcripts in four main ways:

Requesting them online through the IRS website 

The ‘get transcript online tool’ on the IRS website allows you to request to view, print or download your transcripts. To get your transcript:

To create an account, you’ll need to fill in your email, Social Security Number (SSN) and upload a photo of you. You will then have to complete the identity verification steps. 

3. After signing in, select the type of transcript you need.

4. You can then download, save or print out your transcript.

Calling the IRS automated phone system

1. Call the IRS using 1-800-908-9946.

2. Follow the prompts in the automated menu to ask for a transcript.

3. You will have to provide your date of birth, Social Security Number and the address you used for your last tax return. 

4. Select the type of transcript you want and the tax year.

5. Wait for delivery. Your transcript should arrive within 5-10 working days.

Sending a mail request (form 4506-T)

Form 4506-T is a form for requesting a transcript of tax return. You can get one by downloading it from the IRS website. You will then:

1. Fill out the form: you’ll fill your personal information, your SSN, address and the type of transcript you need. 

2. Sign and date the form.

3. Make sure the information you filled in matches your last tax return.

4. On the form, there are instructions on how to mail the form. Mail the form to the address that was specified on the form.

After mailing it, expect your transcript to arrive within 10 working days.

Going to a local IRS office in person

  • You can choose to head to a local IRS office near you to request a transcript. Go with a photo ID and relevant tax information. 
  • Fill the forms you’ll be given and show your documents to the officials.
  • You can wait to get your transcript if it’s available or choose to have it mailed to you. 

How do I get copies of my tax returns? 

You can get copies of your tax return by using Form 4506 (a form for requesting a copy of tax return):
