Kamala Harris aspires to be the first president of the United States after the resignation of Joe Biden.

Next to her is her partner, Douglas Emhoff, better known as “Doug.” Four years ago, when his wife was elected vice president, he was the first man to occupy a place that until that point had only been occupied by women.

The role of “second lady,” as vice presidents’ partners were called, is so linked to women that until Emhoff’s arrival there was no male version of the term.

Emhoff: the second gentleman

After various proposed ideas, he adopted the title of “second gentleman.” Emhoff has his own Twitter account (@SecondGentleman) and has more than 1,700,000 followers.

This 59-year-old lawyer – the same age as his wife – had his own bussiness. While most vice presidents’ wives dedicated their lives to accompanying their partners, Emhoff was in charge of a firm of corporate lawyers.

And how did they meet? It was on a blind date arranged in 2013 by a friend of the couple, when Kamala was attorney general of California.

A year later, they got married. While Kamala had not married before, Emhoff had divorced his first wife six years earlier. With Kerstin, his ex-partner, he has two children.

In fact, Kamala Harris has always talked about the good relationship she has with her stepchildren and her husband’s ex-partner.

Continuing with tradition, Emhoff left his job after his wife’s election as vice president of the United States alongside Joe Biden in 2020. And now, four years later, who knows if he can aspire to renew his title, but as “first gentleman” of the United States of America.
