Popular grocery store, Stop & Shop has announced the closure of 32 storefronts in 5 states by the end of the year. The grocery store chain owned by the Dutch Supermarket company, Ahold Delhaize, will close 10 stores in New Jersey, alongside 22 stores across Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island.
Stop & Shop is a supermarket that offers online and in-store grocery shopping specifically in the Northeastern part of the United States. With over 60,000 employees, the company has 300 locations spread across the five states in this region.
The supermarket chain has a total of 57 stores in New Jersey. However, 10 of those stores will be closed on or before November 2, 2024.
According to a statement by Stop & Shop President Gordon Reid, “Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.”
This complies with Ahold Delhaize’s statement in May that stated the plan to close Stop & Shop locations as part of steps to strengthen the brand and position it for growth. Aside from closing down underperforming stores, the company plans to invest in pricing and top-notch customer experience.
